  1. FDLS 1012: The Creative Curriculum (1) Supporting Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Session One

  2. Learning Outcomes • Clarify the criteria required for the assignment. • Identify the Learning Outcomes to be addressed for Module FDLS 1012. • Identify the main features of Kolb’s Four Stage Model of Learning. • Explain the relevance of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs in classroom practice. • Explain how the theory of Carl Rogers applies to self-esteem. • Produce a checklist of good practice to develop self-esteem with your learners.

  3. Contents of the session • Clarify the criteria required for the assignment and the Intended Learning Outcomes for FDLS 1012. • Locate personal stance using the ‘Blob Tree.’ • Working in pairs, provide examples to support each ILO. • Kolb’s Reflective Cycle. • Exercise on the process of reflection – individual self-portraits based on ‘Selfie.’ • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and relevance to practice.

  4. Paired Task • In your pairs, you need to consider the given ILO for this module and explain how you may meet this. • Remember to give examples from your placements to further support your statements. • After 3 minutes, pass the sheet to another pair who will add their comments. • Continue until the original work is returned to you. • Feedback and discussion.

  5. Learning Outcomes for FDLS 1012 • Demonstrate the skills for effective support through a range of strategies, including the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT), to help the learners in their workplace, develop and improve their literacy and numeracy skills. • Analyse and reflect upon barriers to literacy and numeracy and investigate strategies for overcoming these. • Demonstrate interaction skills to enhance the self-esteem of learners who experience difficulties with literacy/numeracy-based tasks and apply these in practice. • Demonstrate a greater understanding of current legislation and policy in regard to the creative support of literacy and numeracy development.

  6. REflection • What is reflection? • Why do we need to reflect? • Identify the 4 features of Kolb’s 4 Stage Model of Learning.

  7. Individual Task • Use your mobile to take a ‘Selfie’ image. • Freeze it and copy onto the provided frame, draw a self-portrait. • Use appropriate vocabulary to describe how you are feeling. • Please email it to me as an attachment, (Optional!). • Identify 3 things you have reflected on this year, why you reflected on the situation and describe the place where this reflection took place. • Relate to Kolb’s 4 Stage Model of Learning.

  8. Meeting THE NEEDS OF OUR learners • Every learner we meet will have needs that we must aim to meet. • These needs should be constantly reassessed – if we do not meet these needs it is possible that the learner will underachieve. • How can we do this?

  9. Abraham Harold Maslow 1908 - 1970

  10. How can this be applied in the classroom? • Discuss in your groups how we can use Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to meet some of the differing needs of our learners. • Identify a spokesperson to present your thoughts to the group.

  11. Group Task • Using the framework provided, you need to: • Carry out a research task to identify how self-esteem may be linked to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. • Assign a task for each member of your group. • Use a range of theorists to support your statements, including Carl Rogers. • Prepare a short Power Point Presentation to be presented to your peers.

  12. Homework Tasks • Complete the self-assessment quiz. • Write a checklist of ‘Good Practice’ which may help to develop self-esteem with your learners. • Give examples as appropriate from your placements.
