Independent Practice: Watch Speeches on my website and answer the following questions • Who was FDR? • Who Was Hitler? • What characteristics make an effective political leader? • Why do people embrace men like Hitler and FDR? • What similarities do you see in the “atmosphere” at the speech? • If a social institution meets the needs of a society, in what ways do Hitler and FDR attempt to meet this need? • Why was Hitler able to come to power in Germany? • What aspects of democracy are essential to counter the effects of dangerous, yet charismatic leaders such as Hitler? • Research a leader that your believe is very influential. • What makes this person influential? Do you see any similarities between this leader the two previously discussed?

Independent Practice • Finish watching speeches from last class, and answer questions regarding leadership. • For each example below, find an example from our culture: • Find an example of a positive formal sanction, negative formal sanction, positive informal sanction, and a negative informal sanction. 3) Then read the passage on page 161 of your book regarding the death penalty. • Which countries around the world enforce the death penalty? • Which countries do not enforce the death penalty? • Do you think the death penalty is needed to keep social control?
