Introduction • Researched the feasibility of creating a sobriety checkpoint program in Anchorage, Alaska • Researched the statistics and costs of driving under the influence in Anchorage • 5,888 DUIs in 2008 • 22 fatal car accidents • $130 billion dollars a year spent on alcohol related crashes

  4. Research Methods • Conducted secondary research on the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints • Researched driving records through Alaska Division for Motor Vehicles • Distributed and studied a questionaire regarding the problem of alcohol in Anchorage

  5. Criteria • Will the State of Alaska be able to fund this program? • Will this program decrease DUI’s? • Will this program decrease alcohol related accidents?

  6. Research Results Affordability Each checkpoint would save up to $50,000 a year. For every dollar invested, six to 23 dollars is proven to be saved.

  7. Research Results • The figure above shows that Alaskans support having a sobriety checkpoint program. When surveyed, 76% of respondents said that they would vote in favor for a sobriety checkpoint program in Anchorage, Alaska.
