  2. The river Ouse • The source of the river Ouse is situated in the Pennines. • the river has many tributaries some of these are the Foss, Warfe, Ure, Nidd and the Swale.

  3. Drainage Basin • The river Ouse drainage basin consists mainly of the vale of York, a large area of flat land. The water from all the rivers will drain down from the highlands and will eventually end up in the Vale and in the river Ouse the mouth of which is at the Humber estuary.

  4. Drainage basin • The Pennines and the north York moors are dominated by peat soils which means that they act like giant sponge. They can soak up and store water. This affects the discharge of the river Ouse and its tributaries. Vegetation helps with the water as plants will use the water and will also provide help in sustaining the soil.

  5. York • The river Ouse flows through the city of York. The confluence of the Foss and the Ouse is situated in the city centre and flood management strategies have been put in place to restrict the problems caused by flooding. A flood gate was put in place to hold back water from the Foss so that too much water cannot enter the Ouse at any one time.

  7. Drainage basin • The characteristics of the Ouse drainage basin are constantly affected by human development within the drainage basin. The man made ground surfaces which covers the urban areas will not soak up water and there for water will be stored above ground causing flooding. • Human influences include; • farming • forestry • urban developments
