The Sin of Achan • God had given Jericho to Israel 6:2 • That doesn’t mean that Israel had the right to do whatever they wanted with it • One condition of receiving the city was to march around it as God commanded 6:3-5 • Another condition was not to take anything from the city 6:17-19 • They did destroy everyone as God said 6:21

The Sin of Achan • However, “the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things” 7:1 • Achan took some of the forbidden things • All suffered because of the deeds of one • Israel lost the battle of Ai because of Achan • 36 men died in the battle 7:5 • Israel lost their confidence v.2,6

The Sin of Achan • Joshua didn’t understand why they lost the battle • He interceded the way Moses would v.6-9 • God responded firmly v.10-15 • He explained what the problem was v.11 • He told them He would no longer be with them until the problem was removed v.12 • He told them how to remove the problem

The Sin of Achan • It was determined that Achan was responsible • He was confronted and told to confess v.19 • Achan did confess v.20genericly • Specificlyv.21 • “I saw” 1 John 2:16, Matthew 5:27-30 • “I coveted” Matt. 5:28, Exodus 20:17, Col. 3:5 • “I took” James 1:13-15 • “I hid” deceivedv.11, Heb. 4:13, Psalm 139

The Sin of Achan • The stolen loot was retrieved and presented as evidence in front of Joshua v.22-24 • Achan’s family was taken there along with all his possessions v.24 • They were stoned and burned and covered with a great pile of stones v.25 • Because of the trouble he caused v.25 • His name Achanmeans “trouble”

Principles • Many can suffer consequences because of the fault of one • Each individual still is judged individually Ezekiel 18:4, 2 Corinthians 5:10 • Purity of the group is important 1 Cor. 5:6-8 • Secret sins will be exposed Luke 12:1-3 • Sin will be punished 1 Cor. 4:3-5 • Jesus was punished for your sins so you won’t have to suffer for them Isaiah 53:5, Eph. 1:7, Col. 2:12
