  2. At the end of today you should be able to answer…. • What were the reasons for the invasion of Iraq in 2003? • Was the invasion justified at the time and can we justify the invasion today? • What are the issues inside of Iraq today?

  3. Reasons given by the U.S. government for the Invasion of Iraq… • 1. To disarm Iraq of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD’s) • 2. To End Saddam Hussein’s support for terrorism • 3. To free the Iraqi people.

  4. Invasion begins in March 2003….

  5. What has happened since then? • In May 2003, a coalition led by U.S. and Britain overthrows Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Party. • December 2003 – Saddam Captured • June 2004 – Iraq given Sovereignty (the ability to rule over a piece of land.) • January 2005 – Iraqi elections

  6. But wait, where are the WMD’s?

  7. Criticisms of the Iraq War • Cost to the American taxpayer in the trillions • Human casualties around 5000 Americans • Not enough troops to do the job • Maybe up to a million deaths of Iraqis

  8. Public Opinion of the War • In 2003, 75% of Americans polled said they Approved of the way Bush was handling Iraq. • In 2005, 82-87% of Iraqis said they wanted U.S. troops to leave • In 2007, 2/3 of the world’s population believed the U.S. should leave Iraq • In 2009, 31% of people favor the War in Iraq

Iraq Today… • Free Elections • Currently Islamic, Democratic Government • Strategic Framework Agreement: • This agreement states… "the Government of Iraq requests" U.S. forces to remain in Iraq to "maintain security and stability in Iraq," • Iraq has jurisdiction over military contractors and US personnel when not on US bases or on-duty.
