  4. Personal skills to develop: • Working together rather than getting to far out in front • Focusing on infrastructure rather content • Sensitive to organizational structure

Rationale and Purpose • Within the substance abuse field, a well trained workforce directly related to better client outcomes (Kathleen Carroll – Yale) • Identifies and grows talents within the industry • Improves retention within the field • Building a foundation on which to implement evidence based practice • Counselor development

  6. Organization • Training Institute under Baltimore City Directorate • Arranges workforce development and training • Self sustaining • Recognized for CEU’s by the state • Partnering with OETAS, ATTC, Trainers

Substance abuse Counselor Board of Counselor • Certified Supervised Counselor – Alcohol/Drug • CSC – AD requires AA – two year institution • Certified Addictions Counselor – Alcohol/Drug • CSC – AD requires BA- four year institution • Masters level clinicians • Removing the gap between counselor and Masters level clinician

  18. Progress • Meeting monthly • Approved as a committee of the Baltimore City Directorate • Established trainings • Working with OETAS, ATTC, and Trainers • Cost structure to create a self sustaining organization

Lessons learned • Worked within existing structures/organizations • Reaching out to potential partners and letting them bring their expertise to the table • Not only counselor focused in terms of certification, but systems focused in terms of establishing and institutionalizing EBP at all levels of the system

  20. Barriers • Fitting into the current training environment • Learning from past training experiences in Baltimore • Project Boost • Staff turnover • Developing trainings and trainers • Lack of infrastructure within the Baltimore City Directorate

  21. Future directions • Provide trainings • Evaluate outcomes of providers that focus on training • Evaluate the trainings for content and participant satisfaction • Modify the trainings as indicated
