  1. Advances in science and medicine By David Breckterfield, Chandler Ball, CASSIDY BARNES (she wanted her name capitalized) , Kadyn Lee, Courteney Olsen

  2. Cell theory in biology 1600’s • Biological sciences • The biology and science dealing with living organisms. • Physical sciences. • Concerns any non-living organisms such as astronomy, geology, physics, and chemistry. • Cells = tiny bits of living matter • They used microscopes as early as the 1600’s observing cells. • In 1838 MuthiasSchleiden and Theodor Swann introduced cell theory. • It stated that all living things are made up of living matter.

  3. Evolution and Genetics • The cell theory did not explain the variety of plants and animals. • Evolution • Belief that organisms developed through change overtime. • Lamarick’s theory of inheritance • Jean-baptiestLamarick said organisms adapt to their environment. • With inheritance traits are passed down • Charles Darwin • Noted that each kind of animal like birds had more than one kind of bird such as crows and ravens

  4. Fight against disease • 50% percent of people didn’t live past 5 years old ‘till the 1800’s. • Small pox was the worst. • Edward Jenner • Stated that milk maid who had cow pox previously never got small pox. • Lead to vaccinations to small pox • Louis Pasteur • Linked bacteria and disease • Found boiled liquids killed bacteria. • Processed was named pasteurization

  5. Advances in surgery • Chloroform was one of first antiseptics. • Used for eliminating pain and causing unconsciousness. • Robert Koch confirmed Louis Pasteur’s theory • Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin In 1928

  6. The Atom And It’s Structure • John Dalton was the first to obtain convincing data in the existence of atoms • Dmitry Mendeleyev made the first workable periodic table in 1869 • In 1895 Wilhelm C. Rontgen discovered the X-ray also the existence of radiation • Pierre and Marie Curie experimented with radiation and found that each element gave off energy • Ernest Rutherford discovered what makes up an atom

  7. 1905- Albert Einstein published four papers • The first proved the existence of atoms • The second talked of light • In thee third was the special theory of relativity • In the fourth was his famous equation E=mc²
