Major Accomplishments since 1971 • 1983 – Campaigned for ban on dumping radioactive waste into the ocean • 1995 – Prevented Shell from dumping 14,500 tons of oil into the ocean • 2006 – 1/3 of the Great Bear Rainforest is protected from the logging industry • Save the Whales – Led to the initial commercial ban on whaling 30 years ago, as well as the rejection of the proposal to repeal the ban • Save the Amazon – Nike, Adidas, and Timberland no longer buy leather and McDonald’s no longer buys beef from cattle raised in newly deforested areas of the Amazon
Asia Pulp & Paper • APP: Indonesia’s leading paper company and rainforest devastator. The Indonesian rainforest is the last habitat for the endangered Sumatran tiger (400 left in the wild). • Lego, Mattel, and Hasborohave agreed to stop buying packaging material from APP • KFC Indonesia no longer buys from APP • Greenpeace launched campaign to petition KFC and Yum! food chains to stop using APP products
