  1. What are the Ten Classes of the Dewey Decimal System?I want to find books in the library faster!!

  2. Scope: This lesson can be used with middle school or high school students to aide them in finding information readily according to Dewey Class and understanding the use of call numbers in organizing the library.

  3. What & where is the call number? A call number is a number and letters assigned to books in the library, which allow for an organized way to shelve and locate titles. John Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System of assigning call numbers. Look at this book. The call number is 005.7 WOL The numbers are assigned based on the topic of the book, and the letters are the first three letters of the author’s last name. You can find the call number on the front cover, and on the spine of the book.

  4. Meeting the Standards:Why should we read across the classes of Dewey? • S6CS10. S7CS10. S8CS10 Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas by: • a. Reading in All Curriculum Areas • Read a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books per year from a variety subject disciplines and participate in discussions related to curricular learning all areas • Read both informational and fictional texts in a variety of genres and modes of • discourse • Read technical texts related to various subject areas • b. Discussing books • Discuss messages and themes from books in all subject areas. • Respond to a variety of texts in multiple modes of discourse. • Relate messages and themes from one subject area to messages and themes in • another area. • Evaluate the merit of texts in every subject discipline. • Examine author’s purpose in writing. • Recognize the features of disciplinary texts. • c. Building vocabulary knowledge • Demonstrate an understanding of contextual vocabulary in various subjects. • Use content vocabulary in writing and speaking. • Explore understanding of new words found in subject area texts.
