  1. Preliminary Project Cost Estimation Sam Rodkey January 18th, 2005 Project Management Project Manager

  2. Cost Estimation Technique • Total design and development costs are developed using methods outlined in the 2004 NASA Cost Estimation Handbook (ceh.nasa.gov) • The Advanced Missions Cost Model includes the following aspects of a design: • Launch year • Intended mission type and difficulty • Dry mass of vehicle and quantity to be produced • Technology readiness and the existence of previous versions • AMCM is used to provide first order cost analysis and give extremely rough results that match the expected order of magnitude.

  3. Preliminary Cost Estimate Ranges from AMCM* • 6 sets of boosters, each delivers 200 metric tons to LEO, masses are based upon a Saturn V staging regime: Stage 1 - LOX/RP-1 – Empty Mass: 267,000 kg – 4.1-10.0 BILLION Stage 2 – LOX/LH2 – Empty Mass: 93,100 kg – 9.6-14.0 BILLION • 1 transfer vehicle, a maximum total weight of 600 metric tons Empty mass: 120,000 kg (20% of total mass) – 5.9 - 14.5 BILLION • 3 Landers, 4x the size of Apollo LM, uses ascent/descent staging Total Empty mass: 15,000 kg– 15.1-23.4 BILLION • 1 Hab Vehicle, Total mass not to exceed 200 metric tons Total Empty mass: 50,000 kg (25% of total mass) – 10-18.3 BILLION • Estimated Total Project Costs: 44.7 – 80.2 BILLION *Estimates based upon Advanced Missions Cost Modeling tool found at: http://www1.jsc.nasa.gov/bu2/AMCM.html
