  1. Digestive System By Hannah King and Nick Kennedy

  2. Overview • The Digestive System is in charge of breaking down and absorbing nutrients into the blood • This allows us to build and fuel our body cells

  3. Anatomy/Physiology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestion • Mouth: Where food enters and food breakdown begins • Tongue: Muscle used for chewing • Pharynx: Passageway for food, fluids, and air • Esophagus: Passageway for food to the stomach • Liver: Large gland that produces bile which emulsifies fat • Stomach: Stores and breaks down food

  4. Anatomy/physiology • Gallbladder: Stores bile • Pancreas: Produces enzymes to break down food and the hormones insulin and glucagon • Small Intestine: Where chemical digestion begins • Large Intestine: Main organ for absorption of nutrients into the blood stream • Anus: Sphincter that releases waste

  5. Key Terms • Enzymes are what break down food • Food moves through tract because of peristalsis • Villi and microvilli found in the small intestine are responsible for absorbing food • The three sections of the small intestine are: • Duodenum • Jejunum • Ileum • Mechanical Digestion is the basic form of digestion using no chemicals • Found in the mouth • Chemical Digestion utilizes enzymes to break down food • Found in stomach and small intestines
