What is a memoir? • A memory; a description of an event from the past • Written in the first person • Based on the truth • Reveals the feelings of the writer • Has meaning; shows what the author learned from the experience • Focused on one event or one point in the author’s life • About the author’s experience more than the event itself

  3. What is a good idea for a memoir? • Something you have strong feelings about • Something you know a lot about • Something you can describe in great detail • Something your audience will be interested or find worth while

  4. Getting started • Tell the outside story – what was happening? • Tell the inside story – what you were thinking and feeling • Use dialogue to add impact • Tell details that only you, as the author, would know
