  1. IDK0040 Võrgurakendused IUsability II Deniss Kumlander

  2. Elements differensation • It is possible to use white areas to separate elements

  3. Printing • It is common that users will try to print your page. You have to check your pages on printing – a lot of pages are “hard” to print. Use special styles for printing. • Other formats are also used to provide printing like for example “.pdf”.

  4. Content • Easy to orient and understand. • Notice that a process of reading a content from a screen is 25% slower than from a page. • It is common to use short annotations

  5. Page name • The same important as a person name • Despite parson names is normally useful • Shows meaning/information of the page; • Is used to add as a bookmark (favorites). • Commonly contains 2-6 words • Each page should have unique name and the name should explain its content • for example when a user is looking at the name in his favorites

  6. Readability • Background and text should have different contrast colours. • Background is usually monotone or a low-contrast picture. • Text should be static • Moving elements are annoying. • Should be justified to the left side (common western case) • Favor black text on white or pale yellow backgrounds. Avoid gray backgrounds.

  7. Help • Help should be short. • Use examples. • Use a glossary to locate a topic • Use FAQs.

  8. Associations/Metaphors • Use common associations in addition (instead of) text / for example cart below • Avoid using your own instead of common one - i.e. if users are used to use a particular one

  9. Where I am right now? • Demonstrate location inside the site (+ it provides possibility to move back on more than 1 step just by clicking on the corresponding level name)

  10. Where I was? • Differentiate visited and unvisited links; • Use static colour scheme on pages of your site; • Use common colours if possible.

  11. Status • Users should not have to seek out status information. Rather, they should be able to glance at their work environment and be able to gather at least a first approximation of state and workload. • This, however, should not be overdone. http://www.asktog.com/basics/firstPrinciples.html

  12. Defaults • Defaults should be easy to "blow away:" Fields containing defaults should come up selected, so users can replace the default contents with new material quickly and easily. • Defaults should be "intelligent" and responsive. • Do not use the word "default" in an application or service. Replace with "Standard," "Use Customary Settings," "Restore Initial Settings," or some other more specific terms describing what will actually happen. http://www.asktog.com/basics/firstPrinciples.html

  13. Users with disabilities • Under 65 years old - 14% have different disabilities. • After 65 - 50%.

  15. Conclusion • ??? • Notice that for many “unique” sites like EBay, Microsoft etc usability is “nothing” from their popularity point of view. People will come even if those sites will be damn unusable
