  30. 7 Habits of Medical LeadersNHS – London survey • Medical leadership is a banner around which politicians, managers and clinicians all seem happy to gather. To explore how emerging medical leaders are best nurtured and developed, we conducted a focus group exercise using the current Prepare to Lead participants, an NHS London leadership development mentoring programme for doctors, and some invited guests. • Their reflections, thoughts and subsequent discussions along with our experiences working with emerging medical leaders over the past four years, form the basis of these, our seven habits of emerging medical leaders.

  31. 7 Habits of Medical Leaders • Habit 1: Bravery and Resilience • Habit 2: Mentoring • Habit 3: Having a vision • Habit 4: Optimism • Habit 5: Developing networks • Habit 6: Clinical credibility • Habit 7: Recognition of Opportunity

  32. A challenge for senior leaders • If innovative thought leadership is essential to continue to deliver a high quality NHS, are you providing the right support and mentoring to nurture the talent we already have? • Are you challenging bad behaviors in your organizations that inhibit or dissuade those who are less resilient from engaging? • And given that incentives, rewards and desired job descriptions of future medical leaders are unlikely to mirror those currently in senior positions, how will you provide the opportunities within your organization to attract the best emerging medical leaders?

  33. Managerial Skills • Conceptual skills • The ability to analyze and diagnose a situation and distinguish between cause and effect. Strategic thinking and mind-set • Human skills • The ability to understand, alter, lead, and control the behavior of other individuals and groups. • Technical skills • Job-specific skills required to perform a particular type of work or occupation at a high level.

  35. K- SAM Mindset

  36. K- SAM – Graduates

  37. In sum, (S)he isC-SAC • a confident personwho has a strong sense of right and wrong, is adaptable and resilient, knows himself, is discerning in judgment, thinks independently and critically, and communicates effectively; • a self-directed learner who takes responsibility for his own learning, who questions, reflects and perseveres in the pursuit of learning; • an active contributor who is able to work effectively in teams, exercises initiative, takes calculated risks, is innovative and strives for excellence; and, • a concerned citizen who is rooted to Sri Lanka, has a strong civic consciousness, is informed, and takes an active role in bettering the lives of others around him.

  38. The 8th HabitBy Stephen Covey  A Summary  • The Whole-Person paradigm says that people are whole people - body, mind, heart and spirit - and they have four related capacities: • (1) Physical Intelligence, (2) Mental Intelligence, (3) Emotional Intelligence, and (4) Spiritual Intelligence. People also have four related needs: (1) To Live - Survival, (2) To Love - Relationships, (3) To Learn - Growth and Development, and (4) To Leave a Legacy - Meaning and Contribution.

  39. Total Human Paradigm • Body – to Live – Pay me a reasonable salary • Heart – to Love – Treat me kindly • Mind – to Learn – Use me creatively • Sprit – to Leave a Legacy – To contribute to the society in ethical manner

  40. Last will of a father The Story • There was a father who left 17 camels as the inheritance for his three sons. • When the father passed away, his sons opened up the will. The Will of the father stated that the eldest son should get half of 17 camels while the middle son should be given 1/3rd (one-third). The youngest son should be given 1/9th (one-ninth) of the 17 camels.

  41. If they came to you how do you handle this? If you are the wise man? 3rd Alternative The wise man, after giving this thought, brought one camel of his own and added the same to 17. That increased the total to 18 camels. Now, he started reading the deceased father’s will.Half of 18 = 9. So, he gave the eldest son 9 camels1/3rd of 18 = 6. So, he gave the middle son 6 camels1/9th of 18 = 2. So, he gave the youngest son 2 camels. Now add this up: 9 plus 6 plus 2 is 17, and this leaves one camel, which the wise man took away. • So, the three sons decided to go to a wise man. The wise man listened patiently about the Will.

  42. Final Remarks – A great leader chooses the path others will follow Main Points • Try to be a K-SAM Graduate or Professional • Are we producing them? Our Input + Process + Output + Monitoring system • Technical + Human + Conceptual Skills • Total Human Paradigm • Body, Heart, Mind & Sprit • Total Graduate • Look for 3rd Alternative
