  1. HSPA TIPS FOR Juniors

  2. HSPA Test Taking Tips • Answer all the questions on the test. • DO NOT leave any blanks! • Take educated guesses. • If you skip a question, leave a corresponding blank on the answer sheet

  3. Try to fill up the space that you are given in your answer folder for the essays and open-ended questions. The 60 minute persuasive essay should be at least five paragraphs and at least two pages. Answer Lengths

  4. Take Advantage of Time • Use all the time you are given for each section! • If you are done with a section, go back and re-read and correct what you wrote or check your math work. • Don’t rush through the sections, you will probably have enough time to read and answer questions CAREFULLY!!!

  5. DO NOT PUT YOUR HEAD DOWN….. You will have plenty of time to sleep once you graduate! Be alert and at the top of your game for a few hours!

  6. Legibility • Write as NEATLY as you possibly can! • If the scorers can’t read your answer, they can’t grade it. • Use capitals and lower case letters.

  7. The HSPA has both multiple-choice and open-ended questions… MAKE SURE YOUDO ALL THEOPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS! Open-ended Techniques

  8. Open ended • Write paragraph length answers for each of the two dots or bullets in the open ended questions. • Make sure you answer ALL the parts of the questions.

  9. Stuck on a math problem? Start writing. • Write anything: label the diagrams, draw a picture or plug in numbers. Expand or simplify expressions. Write down what you know and see if anything comes from it.

  10. Always show your work. • Silly mistakes often turn great scores into good sores. You may be able to do simpler math in your head but it can lead to silly mistakes. Even if you are confident that you can perform all the steps in your mind, write it down.

  11. What happens if I fail? • Hopefully you will pass the HSPA with flying colors, however, if you FAIL either the math or language arts sections of the March HSPA test, here is what will happen….

  12. You will be placed in a HSPA class senior year for the section you failed, either math, reading or writing. You may have to give up an elective, ROTC, band, CBE, MDE or even vocational school. What if I fail?

  13. Additional Opportunities • In October and March of your senior year you will have opportunities to take the HSPA test again.

  14. The AHSA is work that you must complete in math, language arts or both. You will complete a LENGTHY series of tasks in order to graduate. The Alternate High School Assessment (AHSA)

  15. Results • You won’t find out if you pass the October test until January of your senior year. • March test results don’t arrive until right before graduation.
