  1. CIDER SUGGESITIONS Vernon F. Cormier

  2. Suggestions for Framework Topics • Lateral variation of boundaries • Chemistry, phase, temperature, or combination • Detection of boundaries, sharpness, topography • Structural connections • Correlation of structures, e.g., inner core and mantle • CMB processes with surface processes

  3. Laterally Varying Boundaries: ULVZs • Interpretation: chemistry, phase, temperature or combination? • Detection: wavefield sensitivity?

  4. Structural Connections (a) Contours thickness of anomalous lower velocity layer in the uppermost inner core determined in the study by Stroujkova and Cormier (2005) (b) excitation of backscattered PKiKP coda from heterogeneity in the uppermost inner core determined in the study by Leyton and Koper(2007) (c) lateral variations in attenuation and P velocity in the equatorial region of the inner core determined in the study by Yu and Wen (2005). (d) uppermost inner core P velocity perturbations (solid contours) and predicted inner core growth rate variations (colors) (Aubert et al. 2009)

  5. Student Comments • Would like advance handouts of summary lectures • Debug computer demos and tutorials in advance • Difficult to follow condensed lectures on entire disciplines My Comments • Research project breakout groups are the most valuable and unique aspect of CIDER • Orient large lectures around specific research problems rather than summaries of a discipline • Move computer and software tutorials to breakout groups as required for specific research projects
