  4. What is cancer? • starts in our cells • exists when cells do not behave normally • not just one disease • risk factors increase your chances of getting cancer

  6. How common is prostate cancer in Ontario? The most frequently diagnosed cancers for men are: • prostate cancer • colon cancer • lung cancer In 2012, an estimated 10 900 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and an estimated 1 500 men will die.

  7. Risk factors we can’t control • age – being older than 65 • family history • African ancestry

  8. Possible Risk Factors we can control • high fat diet • physical inactivity • obesity • high diet of calcium • exposure to pesticides • working with cadmium

  9. Early detection • signs & symptoms • testing for prostate cancer – talk to your doctor
