Tundra Located near the North Pole Very cold, winter is the longest season World’s youngest biome Land is usually always covered with snow or ice Large space of treeless land that covers about 20% of Earth’s surface
Plants and Animals of the tundra • Polar Bears • The predators of the area, and bring in people to observe them which provides money to the economy. • Caribou • Very numerous in the tundra's and bring money by offering people opportunity’s to hunt. • Willows • Can grow because they don’t need soil rich in nutrients, and used as pesticide. • Lichens • Are very prominent because able to withstand extreme heat or cold, don’t hold much economical value.
Local Issues The lichens can be harmed by over pollution from factories in the area. Caribou can be over hunted Polar bear can be harmed from global warming Willows can be damaged from tire tracks that take a while to go away
Comparison to Texas Biomes The tundra would be most like the piney woods of Texas because that is where you would most likely find lichens and willows.
Taiga Located in northern Canada and Alaska and also in northern Eurasia Warm humid summers with ample rainfall Extremely cold winters Below freezing 6 months out of the year Lowest recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere at -65° was recorded in the Taiga
Plants and Animals of the Taiga • Mink • Predator of herbivores in the Taiga • Poached and fur used for coats • Elk • Herbivore and used as hunting game • Pine Trees • Main source of logging which is the major economic activity of the Taiga • Douglas Fir Trees • Used for logging and also as Christmas trees
Local Factors Deforestation is the major source of depletion of the Taiga Mush of the land is destroyed by wildfires Insects such as spruce-bark beetles are destroying trees Spraying of pesticides is destroying plants and trees and killing animals Much land is destroyed for mining and drilling for oil
Taiga Comparison to Texas Biome The Taiga is filled with coniferous trees that include pine tress, douglas firs, and white spruce trees. The taiga would be most compared to the Piney Woods Biome of Texas.
Temperate Forest • Wide range of climates • Receive about 20-60 inches of rain annually • Can be found all over the world • Four changing seasons • Rain during spring and summer and snow during fall and winter months • Hot in summers and extremely cold during winters • Broke up into four zones • Stratum zone, Small tree and Sapling zone, Shrub zone, and Herb zone • Can be compared to the Piney Woods of Texas
Plants and Animals of the Temperate Forest • Black Bear • Predator of the area • Hunted and poached • Deer • Omnivores and bring in money as hunting game • Maple Tree • Cut down and used for maple syrup • Walnut Tree • Cut down and walnuts used for food
Local Factors Acid Rain damages the trees and causes them to produce less seeds Deforestation Clear Cutting of trees Introduction of non-native animals and plants upsets the balance of the ecosystem Hunting
Ecotourism Ecotourism is the responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of the local people Provides economic support to the local people Promotes awareness of local issues impacting sustainability Builds cultural awareness Provides a fun experience to the travelers as well as the natives
Oceans • World’s largest biome • Separated into four regions or separate oceans • Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic • Has the richest diversity of plant and animal species in the world • Covers about half the globe
Plants and Animals of Oceans • Tuna Fish • Carnivores and are used for fished for food • Phaeton • Support all life of the ocean by serving as food for the prey which are then hunted by predators • Algae • Provides oxygen to the air to help balance oxygen levels • Used as food for humans • Seaweed • Seaweed is used as food for humans and animals
Factors affecting Oceans • Overfishing • Poaching of fish for fins • Coral Bleaching • Global Warming is causing ocean levels to rise • High Mercury levels • Great Pacific Garbage Patch • Swarm of trash caught in current • Dumping
Ecotourism Destination We chose the ocean as the best biome for ecotourism We decided the Bahamas would be the best place to visit
