  2. Invigilation – General principles • Invigilation is a centre responsibility • SQA expects centres to follow JCQ guidance • Assessment process must be fair for all candidates, in all centres • Invigilator must: • prevent candidate malpractice • maintain the security of the assessments

  3. Invigilators: who and how many? • A tutor/trainer who has be involved in preparing the candidates should not act as the sole invigilator • One invigilator for each group of 20 or fewer candidates • Technical support should be available during the assessment

  4. Candidate Identification • Centres must ensure the ID of each candidate is checked before the assessment • Tutor/trainers may be present before the assessment starts to assist with ID check • Ensure candidates carefully check their details on SOLAR once they enter the keycode: • confirm name and d.o.b • confirm assessment

  5. Candidate Instructions • Invigilators should announce candidate instructions before the assessment starts • Instructions should include: • No mobile phones or other digital communication or storage devices are allowed in the exam room • Do not attempt to communicate with other candidates during the assessment • List any items candidates may be allowed in the exam room (calculator, dictionary, note paper and pen) • Start time and finish time

  6. Room layout for assessments • Any posters, wall charts or other information that might assist candidates should be removed • Seating should be arranged to ensure one candidate does not overlook the screen of another • Centre must record and retain a seating plan for the assessment

  7. Potential Malpractice • SQA Markers check for any signs of similarity in candidate responses • SQA fully investigates: • Potential malpractice highlighted during marking • Any allegations of malpractice raised by candidates or centre staff

  8. Tutor/trainer qualifications? • There are no specific qualifications specified for tutor/trainers delivering Functional Skills • Tutor/trainers must be: • fully conversant with the FS criteria and the skills standards and assessment weightings • competent in the Functional Skill they are delivering, to a level that is above the level they are delivering • We would encourage tutor/trainers to work towards appropriate qualifications (e.g. Cert of Ed, Learning & Dev Units)
