What is so special about IB? • Recognized around the world • Focus on international perspectives • Exhaustive authorization process • Enhanced opportunities at colleges and universities • Emphasis on creative and service-oriented activities as well as academics
What is the Diploma Programme? • Two year curriculum for juniors and seniors • The Diploma Programme prepares students for college and encourages them to: • Ask challenging questions • Learn how to learn • Develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture • Develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures
What is in the curriculum? Six subjects: • English • Foreign Language • Math • Individuals and Societies • Experimental Science • The Arts/Elective
What is in the curriculum? Three additional components: • Extended Essay (EE) • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)
External: Essays Structured problems Short-response Data-response Text-response Case-study Multiple-choice (limited) Internal Oral work Fieldwork Laboratory work Investigations Artistic performances Assessments
Grading • Six courses • Scores range from 1 to 7 • Up to 3 additional points for EE and TOK • Total possible points = 45 • Diploma = 24 points (and meeting all requirements)
Do universities recognize the IB diploma? • Widely recognized • Students have a reputation as being lifelong learners and critical thinkers • Individual universities have their own acceptance policies for IB coursework
Application Process • Go to the school web site for the application. • You will need to complete the application and get four teacher recommendations. • Applications are due to Sherry Martin by Thursday, December 15. • Students will be notified of decisions by Friday, January 20. • Slots not filled by TLH students will be open for students from outside.
