What is Chloroplast? • Chloroplast- are organelles special units in a plant and algal cells • They conduct photosynthesis in plants , the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll that captures the energy from sunlight • It stores it in an energy storage ATP and NADPH, and frees oxygen from water
Lineages and evolution • Chloroplasts few of many types of organelles in a plant cell. • They are originated from cyanobacteria through endosymbiosis. • Chloroplasts are only found in plants algae.
Cyanobacterial ancestor • Cyanobacteria are basically the ancestors of chloroplasts. • They can be called blue-green algae even though they are prokaryotes • Prokaryotes- single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles
Other facts • The alga Cyanophora, a glaucophyte, is thought to be one of the first organism to have chloroplast in it. • The Glaucophyte chloroplast group is the smallest of three main chloroplasts • Glaucophyte chloroplast thylakoids are studded with light colleting structures called phycobilisomes. • Phycobilisomes- light harvesting antennae of photosysem 2 in cyanobacteria, red algae and glaucophytes.
