Today’s Learning Target I can define and give an example of an ionic compound.
Ionic Compounds • Are formed by the combining of metals and non metals, and by the transfer of electrons. • Metal atoms give electrons, while nonmetal atoms receive electrons. • The compound formed is electrically neutral.
Writing Formulas for Ionic CompoundsExample: Calcium and Iodine • Step 1: Write the symbol with the metal first. • Step 2: Write the ionic charge above each symbol.
Step 3: Write the ionic charges above the symbols for the elements and crisscross the numbers writing them as subscripts.
Try These Examples • Aluminum & Sulfur • Sodium & Bromine • Potassium and Oxygen
Try These Examples • Potassium Sulfate • Ammonium Carbonate • Iron (III) Oxide
TRY SOME ON YOUR OWN! • Sodium chloride • Lithium sulfide • Silver Carbonate
Naming Ionic Compounds • The name of the metal comes first followed by the name of the nonmetal. • The ending of the nonmetal changes to “ide”.
