COMPETITIVE EVENTS • Health Science Events: THESE ARE ALL INDIVIDUAL KNOWLEDGE-BASED EVENTS • Competitors in these events will take an on line computerized multiple choice test • The top 3 competitors in the area will advance to state • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will obtain and study reference books • Dental Terminology (100 question test) • Medical Terminology (100 question test) • Medical Reading (50 question test and essay tie breaker) • Medical Math (50 question test) • Medical Spelling (50 question test and 2nd round at area competition is a spell down) • Knowledge Exams: (All are 100 question tests) • Nutrition • Pathophysiology • Human Growth and Development • Pharmacology • Medical Law and Ethics • Transcultural Healthcare (new event)

Health Professions Events: THESE ARE INDIVIDUAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILL BASED EVENTS • Competitors in these events will take an on line computerized 50 question multiple choice test • The top 10 competitors will advance to area competition and will be required to perform skills as outlined in the event guidelines • The top 3 competitors at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will obtain and study reference books • Biotechnology • Clinical Nursing • Dental Science • Home Health Aide • Medical Assisting • Nursing Assisting • Physical Therapy • Sports Medicine • Veterinary Medicine • Health Profession Event individual event with no test, competitor completes portfolio and attends area competition • 1. Clinical Specialty • Recognition Events: • The following event is a Knowledge Test based on current events in Healthcare. Several websites are the sources for the current events articles. The student will prepare and study for this multiple choice test and the top 10% of students advance. • HEALTHCARE ISSUES EXAM (50 question test) • Competitors may take the Healthcare Issues Exam in addition to competing in ONE OTHER EVENT. There is an additional charge of $20 for this event.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS: • THESE ARE PARTNER OR TEAM EVENTS THAT ARE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL BASED EVENTS • Competitors in these events will take an on line computerized multiple choice tests • The top 10 competitors will advance to area competition and will be required to perform skills as outlined in the event guidelines • The top 3 competitors at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will obtain and study reference books recommended. • 1. CERT SKILLS (Partner event) • 2. CPR/ FIRST AID (Partner event) • 3. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (Partner event) • 4. EPIDEMIOLOGY (Individual event with 50 question written test and case study) • EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS THAT DO NOT INCLUDE ON LINE TESTS: • Competitors attend area competition and bring prepared materials and present portfolio according to event guidelines • The top 3 competitors at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • 1. MRC PARTNERSHIP (Team of 2 to 6 students) • 2. PUBLIC HEALTH ( Team of 2 to 6 students) • 2013-14 TOPIC: Open Pandora’s Box: Start the Conversation about • Community Mental Health

Leadership Events: These are individual events that do not require on line testing: • Competitors attend area competition • The top 3 competitors at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will do some preparation except for extemporaneous events • Extemporaneous Health Poster • Extemporaneous Writing • Job Seeking Skills • Medical Photography • Prepared Speaking • 2013-14 Topic: The Future Starts Now • 6. Researched Persuasive Speaking • The topics for 2013-14 are: • • Vitamin Supplements: Hype or Help? • • Obesity: Disease or Choice? • Leadership Events: • The following Leadership event is an individual event that does require an on line test. • Competitors in these events will take an on line computerized multiple choice tests • The top 10 competitors will advance to area competition and will be required to present portfolio and answer questions from judges. • The top 3 competitors at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 competitors in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will obtain and study reference books recommended. • 1. Healthy Lifestyle

Teamwork Events: The following events are team events that require on line testing • Competitors in these events will take an on line computerized multiple choice tests • The top 10 teams will advance to area competition and will be required to compete as outlined in the event guidelines • The top 3 teams at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 teams in the state will advance to nationals. • Students will obtain and study reference books • Biomedical Debate (Team of 3-4 members) (50 question test) • 2013-14 Topic: The U.S. Government is failing war injured service members. • Creative Problem Solving (Team of 3 -4 members) (50 question test) • Forensic Medicine (Team of 2 members) (50 question test) • HOSA Bowl (Team of 3-4 members) (50 question test) • Parliamentary Procedures (Team of 5-8 members) (100 question test) • Teamwork Events: The following events are team events that DO NOT require testing • Competitors in these events will attend area competition and bring prepared materials and present portfolio/ display/ PSA as outlined in event guidelines • The top 3 teams at area will advance to state competition. • The top 3 teams in the state will advance to nationals. • Teams will prepare in advance according to event guidelines • Health Career Display (Team of 2 members) • Community Awareness (Team of 2-4 members) • Health Education (Team of 2-4 members) • Public Service Announcement (Team of 3-6 members) • 2013-14 Topic: Child Hunger Ends Here – Educating Your • Community on how to Prevent Child Hunger
