Who • Herbert Hoover – 31st president of the US. President during the beginning and roughest part of the Great Depression. Often blamed for the depression. • Franklin D. Roosevelt – 32nd President of the US. President after Hoover during the Great Depression and World War II. Created the New Deal.
What • Period of time that left many Americans unemployed, bankrupt, and homeless.
When • October 1929 – late 1930’s/ early 1940’s
Where • All of the United States was affected by the Great Depression, but the states that were the most affected were: California, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The whole world was affected by the depression because it interfered with the trading system.
Why • The causes of the Great Depression are still debated today, but most people believe the stock market crash of 1929 and bank failures all over the country to be the main causes.
Statistics • The unemployment rate in the US rose to about 27% compared to todays unemployment rate of 7.6% • About 15% of Americans were homeless after the Great Depression.
