Rotation 1: Allergy • Within this rotation we have completed many different tasks, including: • Studying the background of allergies • Make a movie maker informing the public about the harmfulness of the allergy MSG
MSG- Food Allergy • MSG stands for Monosodium glutamate • MSG is a food additive used as a flavor enhancer that few people react to adversely eating it • As an allergic reaction to MSG, it causes sever headaches, dizziness, throat tightness, jaw tightness, and upper back tightness
Interesting Facts About MSG • Mostly found in Chinese Food • Is commonly known as “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome”
MSG- Is it treatable? • Yes, MSG is treated by all of the following: • Anaphlaxis Treatment • Epinephrine • Establishment of Airway • I.V. treatment • CPR • Steroids • Volume Expanders
Rotation 2: Veterinarian rotation
Working with Dr. Shakwat • We were given a mystery organism along with 5 other relatives to the species: Muskrat Wild Boar Three Toed SlothKoala Bear Beaver
Working with Dr. Shakwat • Tasks to complete: • We first practiced using Cladograms • Analyze Amino Acid data from hemoglobin and Cytochrome C (taken from mystery organism and related species) • Analyze DNA Electrophoresis data • Create a scratch cladogram with mystery organism
Evidence for Conclusion: • Examining Amino Acid sequences in Hemoglobin helped us see the amount of differences in the blood between the organisms to see any relationships • Cytochrome C Analysis • Electrophoresis Chart: Examining patterns of DNA strands left behind, to see the similarities and differences between the mystery organism and related species.
Electrophoresis Chart • An electric current is applied to a gel block that contains the samples of DNA • The electric current causes the negatively charged DNA molecules to move through the gel towards the positively charged end
Coming to a Conclusion • In the hemoglobin and Cytochrome C tests, the three toed sloth was most closely related to the koala bear, leaving it third on our Cladogram • Followed by the muskrat and wild boar who were tied in relationship in the hemoglobin, Cytochrome C, and electrophoresis tests
Final Analysis • Based on our data we concluded that the Koala Bear is most closely related to our mystery organism • The Beaver has the most amount of differences with the mystery organism between all three tests

Rotation 3: Pediatric Oncology
Tasks: • Research all articles on pesticides • Each group member writes their own letter to Mr. Fisher – the Secretary of Agriculture
Our main goal was to prove to Mr. Fisher that children born in areas where pesticides are applied are the cause of cancer. • For Example: • The Pinelands in New Jersey is a main site of Cranberry and Blueberry growth, and cultivators apply pesticides to them to keep pests away.
Evidence: • Most of our background information came out of the articles. • For example: • 26 out of 51 pesticides were known to cause cancer. Also known as carcinogenicity. • Many pesticides brought into homes from families who worked as farmers.
Conclusion: • Our end result was to make Mr. Fisher more interested in the matter so we could prevent future cancer in children.
Through the 3 of our rotations: • We learned what MSG is, and how to treat it • We learned how to conduct different tests/experiments to find a mystery animal based on its DNA and blood samples • We learned that different pesticides can cause early childhood cancer and how to prevent it
Final Conclusion Finally, we learned how to use data and our previous knowledge to come to a conclusion of every day problems we face in life.
