  3. WHAT IS AN AMERICAN? NATIVE AMERICANS With ancestors who crossed the Bering Strait, by 1492 there were 1 million to 2 million Native Americans in more than 240 cultures. EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT Settlements were established in St. Augustine, Fla. (Spaniards) in 1565 and on Roanoke Island, N.C. (English) in 1587. Nobody knows the fate of the Roanoke Island colonists.They vanished within three years.

  4. WHAT IS AN AMERICAN? JAMESTOWN, VA. The Virginia colony was established in 1607 and thrived on the tobacco trade, first using indentured servants and then slaves. SLAVERY The first 19 slaves, captured by Dutch traders froma Spanish ship, arrived in Jamestown in 1619.

PURITAN SETTLEMENTS The Mayflower landed in Plymouth, Mass., in 1620and the Massachusetts Bay colony was established in 1630. • Puritans escaped religious harassment, first inEngland and subsequently in the Netherlands. • The communities functioned as theocracies, guided by religious law. • Preservation of the community was the primedirective. Individual punishment was swift and severe.
