ROMANTICISM: A Response to the Industrial Revolution
Europe c.1790-1840 • The Industrial Revolution has changed society • Pollution, endless work • People feel dehumanized • The Enlightenment Revolutions failed • Congress of Vienna tries to stop future revolution • People know the individual has value, but they feel alienated
Romanticism • Artists are the critics of society • Reacting againstthe Enlightenment,failed revolutions, and the Industrialization • Emotion > Reason • Nature > Society • “Romantic” = idealistic, fantasy, unrealistic
Nature • Glorification of Nature • An escape from Industrialization • Theme of the rugged, lonely individual
Exoticism • Exoticism: Interest in exotic, foreign lands • Reflects a desire to escape from reality • Fuels a desire to acquire new and different things
Nationalism • NATIONALISM: loyalty and pride in a nation of people that share common culture and history • Nationalism led to REVOLUTION • Crushed by Congress of Vienna/Concert of Europe • Kept alive in ART!
Nationalism cont. • Glorification of heroes and heroic actions to show pride in your nation • France c.1848 • King Charles X = absolute monarch • Nationalist revolution overthrows king and creates a new republic • Louis-Napoloen (aka Napoleon III) now in charge • Rise of Nationalism throughout Europe will fuel Imperialism
