  1. HHFW Driven H Mode Revisited B.P. LeBlanc and the usual suspects HHFW/EBW ET 14-Jan-2004

  2. Goals • Reproduce HHFW H-mode plasmas • Expand operational range • So far achieved: • Ip ≈ 0.4 - 0.5 MA, BT≈ 0.37 - 0.45 T, low density, LSN • New range sought: • Ip ≈ 0.4 - 1.0 MA, BT≈ 0.35 - 0.6 T, medium to high density, preferably DND • Document HHFW H-mode plasmas • Produce useful plasma for long pulse operation and HFW + NBI operation

  3. Reproduce HHFW H-mode Plasmas • Initial plasma • Use DND developed during HHFW conditioning, • Or, start with 109759 LSN and moves toward DND

  4. Expand Experimental Range • Need go to go high Ip, ≥ 1.0 MA, since want this plasma to be eventual NBI target • Want tall DND, which probably needs high Ip anyway • 0.35 - 0.6 T, but likely limited to 0.45 T for a while • Obtain high density without interfering with RF • Investigate high field side fueling • Supersonic gas injector • K// = 14m-1, then 7 m-1.

  5. Document Plasma • CHERS with NBI 10-ms blips, every ≥ 0.05 s • Edge rotation diagnostic, ERD • vf and vq, for carbon impurity, get Er • MPTS, Ha, SXR, Neutrons • UCLA reflectometer in fluctuation mode • ORNL reflectometer ? • Gas puff imaging, GPI • X-point tangential view • UCSD fast probe ? • Ha cameras, x-point and center stack midplane

  6. Anticipated Deliverables • HHFW H-mode plasmas • Success if ≥ 100 kJ • DND HHFW H-mode plasmas suitable for NBI into HHFW H-mode experiments • Target for long duration HHFW plasma operation (J.R. Wilson) • Transport analysis (TRANSP, CURRAY) • m-stability analysis • ITERPby(2) H-mode scaling • Another case study for electron transport
