Welcome to World Geography. The most relevant class you will ever take. What is Geography about?. Geography is the study of the earth and all that is on the earth (nothing too big). It is broken down into two disciplines: Physical Geography (landforms and stuff) Human Geography (our focus).

  3. What do Geographers study? • Anything and Everything in the world. • Ways that people affect the world. • Cultures • Governments • Businesses • Places • Why they are located where they are • Why they are important

  4. What’s Human Geography about? • How do humans use and impact the earth? • Where are people and places located? • Why are people and places located where they are? • How are people and places arranged spatially across the earth?

  5. What will WE study? • Fundamental Geographic Concepts • Major themes of Geography • Lots about maps, including: • Different types of maps • How to use maps • How to analyze maps • And more….

  6. What will WE study? • Cultures and Cultural Realms • Dividing the world into culture regions. • Effects of culture on people and places • Religions • Languages • And more…

  7. What will WE study? • Government and Politics (without geography, government doesn’t exist) • Jurisdictions and Borders • Spatial elements of politics • Conflicts and cooperation at various scales

  8. What will WE study? • The Economy and Business • Dependent relationship between geography and business • Globalization of business • And more…

  9. What will WE study? • Population of the World, the US, and Colorado (It’s our most important issue) • Births and Deaths • Population growth and measurement • Migration of people • And more…

  10. What will WE study? • Humans and the environment • Human adaptation to nature • Human interaction with nature • Human changes to nature

  11. How do we learn about geography? • Lectures - I have lots of stories • Reading - We don’t use textbooks often • Videos - The fun kind • Projects - Some small and some big

  12. How do I calculate grades? • The dreaded weighted category system • Tests and Quizzes (including your final exam) = 66% • Homework and Projects = 34% • Grade is not final until January

  13. What do I expect out of you? • Be here on time and ready to go. • Do geography in here (not anything else). • Put the gadgets away. • Be responsible for your learning, your behavior, and your work.
