  2. League of Nations • It was a precursor to the United Nations • It was founded at the Paris Peace Conference after World War I • It failed, however, in preventing the aggressions of the Axis powers • It also ineffectively enforced the punishment that it placed on Germany after World War I

  3. League of Nations:1919-1946

  4. World War II • It included Russian, German, and Japanese atrocities • Germans targeted the Jewish, prisoners of war, communists, gypsies, homosexuals, and political opposition and established work camps and death camps • Russians targeted political opposition, prisoners of war • Japanese targeted prisoners of war

  6. What IS the United Nations? • International organization founded after World War II by 51 countries • International peace and security by developing stronger ties to other countries • Promoting human rights, better living, and social progress. • Follows a charter

  7. Main Bodies of the United NATIONS • General Assembly • Security Council • Economic and Social Council • Trusteeship Council • International Court of Justice

  8. General Assembly • Composed of representatives from all member countries • 193 member states • Makes decisions about peace, security, admission of new members, and budgets • Requires a 2/3 majority vote and each country has 1 vote.

  9. Security council • Maintains peace and security under the UN Charter. • 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members

  10. Economic and Social Council • Coordinates economic and social work of the United Nations • It also controls specialized agencies and institutions within the United Nations. • It consists of 54 members.

  11. Trusteeship Council • Provides supervision for the 11 Trust Territories that are administrated of 7 Member States • Prepares these Trust Territories for self-government and independence.

  12. International Court of Justice • It is located in at the Hague, Netherlands • It is the judicial court of the United Nations • Settles disputes between member states • Has 15 judges • Gives advice to the UN and the sub-agencies of the UN.

  13. Secretariat • Administers and enforces laws and rules prescribed by the United Nations • Ban Ki-Moon is the Secretary General who is in charge of the Secretariat • Should be unbiased
