  8. What do Israelis believe? • Jerusalem should remain unified within Israel's political control • For over 3,300 years, Jerusalem has been the Jewish capital • Jerusalem is mentioned over 700 times in Tanach, the Jewish Holy Scriptures. Jerusalem is not mentioned once in the Koran • The Jewish refugees were forced to flee from Arab lands due to Arab brutality, persecution and pogroms

  9. What is the Palestinian and Israeli Conflict? • Conflict is between two ethnic groups, Palestinians and Israelis • Fighting over land they both claim as theirs • Both of their religions promised the same land to them

  10. When Did the Conflict Begin? • Both groups have claimed the area for thousands of years • The United Nations has been involved and will continue to work towards peace between the two nations.

  11. How Did It Start? • The modern conflict started when the United Nations agreed to divide the land they both claimed into two equal countries, a Palestinian one and an Israeli one. • The plan went through, despite the protests from Palestine and much of the Muslim world • However, today Israel controls all of the land, and there is not an official Palestinian state.

  12. What Happened? • The major conflict began when Israel was created in 1947. • Israel took over the state of Palestine. • The Israelis did not abide by the borders drawn by the U.N. and continued to push into the new Palestine.

  13. Menachem Begin • Born in Russia in 1913 • Was the leader of an underground group (Irgun) fighting to make Israeli a Jewish state in 1944 • He fought to remove British troops from Palestine • Ordered the bombing of the British administrative and military headquarters at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946 • Irgun claimed that their warnings to evacuate the headquarters were ignored

  14. The First Intifada • In December 1987 spontaneous outbreaks of violence towards Israeli soldiers broke out across the West Bank and Gaza • Violent acts were committed due to false rumors spread by Muslim clerics • Developed into a well-organized rebellion • Civilians attacked with axes, stones, Molotov cocktails, grenades, and firearms • Not well prepared to fight Israeli soldiers

  15. The Wall • Built in 2006 it separated families and increased conflict and oppression.

  17. The Hijab • Most Muslim women wear a hijab to cover their heads for a number of reasons. • Modesty • God requires women to cover their hair • Convey a message of purity • They accentuate beauty and are a necessary part of any women's outfit.
