Pilgrims Progress lesson plan 1 Title: In search of truth • Start with Prayer led by one man • Introduction time (self introduction by the moderator and the group ) • State the objectives • Brain storm on the preparation for holiday outing e.g. tools to be carried, prior-knowledge etc • Briefly give an Introduction of the book – author,

  3. Pilgrims Progress lesson plan • John Bunyan 1628- 1688 • He was an English preacher and author. He is featured as a parliamentarian fighter during the British Civil War 1642-1652. • He preached for seven years in a Baptist church in Bedford until he was arrested and imprisoned in1660 being accused of preaching without license. One may see this as a paradox. • In the next twelve years behind bars he wrote the spiritual autobiography “ Grace Abounding” (1666). • His joy did not last Long. • In 1672 he was re-arrested and it is during this second time imprisonment that he started his masterpiece project on the Christian allegory “Pilgrims progress”. • State the importance of the book in the Christians history/ settings 2nd to Bible read and sold book worldwide • Historical background • Introduce the characters in the book • Encourage members to get and start reading the book (“Pilgrim’s progress”, by John Bunyan) before the next meeting

Pilgrims Progress lesson plan 2 Title: Burdens are lifted at Calvary • Say a short Prayer • Lead a discussion based on Chapter 2 and 3 of pilgrims progress. • Explain the difference between pilgrim and Christian as portrayed by the author. • Open the floor for questions from the group. • Address on God’s mercy and pardon for sin in the puritans theological point of view • Question of the week: What is the unpardonable sin?

Pilgrims Progress lesson plan 3 Title: Put on the whole armour of the Lord • Say a short Prayer • From Graceless to Christian • The word of God is vital as the pilgrims’ map. • Keep to the centre of the narrow way. • Satan roars like the chained lions , feared not • Comfort lays ahead • Face the enemy and never retreat for no protection at the back • Further reading: Eph 6:10-18; Heb 2:14,15 Psa113:7, 1Peter 5 • Encourage the students to read the preceding chapters of the book in advance.
