Introduction • Intel corporation uses de-ionized water in the computer chip manufacturing process. • To remove particles and ions from the water, Intel uses reverse osmosis plants (RO’s) to perform this task. • Within each of these plants there are at least fourteen pressure vessels that each contain six reverse osmosis membranes connected in series by an interconnector • Two different membrane styles are used at Intel (Glegg (right), Code line (left)) Code line Glegg Several arrays of reverse osmosis plants

Introduction Continued • Each membrane has a black chevron seal on one end. • These membranes are removed from the pressure vessels for maintenance. • The current procedure for removal of these membranes: • all six membranes are manually pushed with a piece of PVC pipe from one end by two people • A third person catches the membranes on the other end of the pressure correct • The current procedure is not safe or ergonomically correct RO membrane and interconnector

  5. Mission statement • To develop a tool to remove reverse osmosis membranes from the reverse osmosis plant pressure vessels. This tool needs to be compact, easy to use, robust, and have minimal impact on the time it takes to remove the reverse osmosis membranes. A working prototype is to be delivered to Intel by June of 2008.

Project plan Specifics • Design tool that does not impact the current time by more than 25%. • The tool will improve the ergonomics and safety of the current membrane removal method. • The force required to remove the membranes will be tested. • The membrane removal tool will be tested after fabrication to establish if goals have been met • The cost shall be less than 7500$ • All reports, presentations, and prototype will be delivered on schedule.

Conclusion • The reverse osmosis membrane removal tool is a unique specialty tool • Main concerns of project: • Performance • Durability • Project engineering challenges: • Time constraints • Size constraints • Weight Constraints • The tool will: • Improve the safety and ergonomics of the removal of membrane. • Future possibilities: Our tool has the potential to be utilized by other companies besides Intel that use similar reverse osmosis plants for water purification.
