  1. How does your media product represent particular social groups? HOW SOCIAL GROUPS ARE REPRESENTED TO US THROUGH MEDIA TEXTS?

  2. Social groups For my magazine front cover and contents page I have chosen my social groups which will represent my product. Here are some of the example of my social groups: GENEDR- My magazine product does appeal to both genders male and female. This is so then I will have more people to buy and read the magazine. The both genders will able to relate to the magazine, because there will be some regulars and feature, which will includes things that will interest them. E.g. on the contents page there is a section where it mentions ‘updates on winter trends boys & girls’ AGE- The age group of my magazine is16-19, these are teenagers who are studying in sixth form, years 12, 13 and 14. ETHNICITY- People who are from a different ethnic background will able to buy my magazine as it applies to anyone but age 16-19. I have shown this on my magazine front cover using students who have an ethnic background, so it shows that The Regis School Sixth Form accept anyone no matter if your have a different race/ nationality.

  3. audience I have represented students and student life in my magazine. I have created this through images and the language I have used, which will appeal to my social group. Here are some example: In this image the connotation created for the audience is that this magazine shows friendship group and happiness, which like relates to students life. In this image I have used a male student who is dressed sporty. This will relate to my target audience, people who like sport. So I have created a section in my magazine- ‘School Events’ , e.g. include games, sport, clubs. In this image I have used have used language that represent students. E.g. Cover line from the front cover- ‘Sixth Form News & Updates’ links to student study/ school life. Also the sell line- ‘6 Smart Ways To Brighten Up Your Look!’ the work ‘Brighten’ connotes fun and happiness. In this image the subtitle- ‘Sixth Form Fashion’ relates to the student life ,where most people are into how they present themselves to others and find fashion is one of the main issue they need to consider.

  4. Production I have represented other social groups such as different nationality. I have done this by asking different students who have a ethnic background (Asian, Hungarian, Brazilian) that I know to be on my magazine cover. This is because I wanted my magazine to look different and be commercial; for people to it is not bias, it people to any kind of person. I do think my product is inclusive, because I have included the right people on my magazine. I have included both genders, different age group between 16-19 and different race.

  5. representation My representation reinforces stereotype, this is because I have used students who look academic and are ready to learn. I have shown this through the background of my image, where it looks as if the students have just entered in the school building. They look happy by them smiling and look sociable by them talking and looking at each other. This creates a positive connotation for the purpose of my magazine. My magazine does not challenge the stereotype because the students I have chosen do not go against the stereotype of the genre ‘student magazine’.
