  2. Delegation “Transferring responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another while retaining the accountability for the outcome”

  3. Delegation • Delegation is a fundamental aspect of a Leader or Manager’s job; • It is transferring a task or procedure to someone else! • In this context , person delegating can be the coxswain on the vessel, the training officer, or the station leader.

  4. Delegation • In a rescue vessel on a mission, it may the delegation of authority to an experienced crew, to take charge of an operation ashore, allowing the Coxswain to concentrate on the safety of the vessel, and rescue communications.

  5. Delegation • Delegation implies that the subordinate is given the authority to do the job, can make independent decisions, and has the responsibility for seeing that the job is done well.

  6. Delegation The Manager or Leader must: • determine the task to be accomplished • assess each person’s competency • assess amount of decision making needed • determine the level of supervision available

  9. Four steps for Delegation 1. Select a capable person 2. Explain the task and outcomes to occur 3. Give the necessary authority and means for doing the job 4. Arrange to keep in contact and give feedback.

  10. Delegation Items that can be delegated include: 1. Supervision “Providing guidance for the accomplishment of a task or activity with direction, periodic inspection of accomplishment”…“function of qualification” 2. Allocating tasks 3. Taking action

  12. Delegation Delegation is: • using written or verbal instructions to describe procedures to be used for the operation. • to include two way communication with the Leader / Manager when detached, e.g. placed on a towing vessel or in charge of first aid case ashore away from vessel.

Making the Decision to Delegate Determine: • the potential for harm • the complexity of the search and rescue activity • the required problem solving and innovation • the predictability of the outcome • the extent of client interaction (the amount that person being delegated to, will interact with the public)

  18. Delegation Don’ts Leaders / managers should NEVER attempt to delegate: • Personal accountability • Discipline of employees under them • Recognition and praise/ actions associated with morale and related motivation

Legal Aspects of Delegation • Age old fear of what a person/ leader / manager can be sued for! • Delegation is part of the leaders / managers role. • Leader / Manager assumes responsibility for supervision, whether physically present or not • Liability if found negligent in the process of delegating and supervising • Judgment should not be delegated
