  1. Data handling Thursday

  2. Objectives for today • Extending our knowledge of statistics – range, mode, median and the mean. • Today we are focusing on finding the mode and the range.

  3. Learning objectives for today • To be able to explain what the words mode and range mean. • To be able to find the mode and the range of a set of data.

  4. Recap on vocabulary Today we are going to learn what this word means? mean

  5. Recap on vocabulary mean The mean is the average value

  6. Finding the MEAN 10 20 15 We work this out by adding the numbers together and dividing that number by the total number of values in the data set.

  7. Now try these! • 5 7 = • 12 10 16 = • 10 15 10 20 = The mean may not be one of the values.

  8. Recap on vocabulary What does the word mean? range The difference between the smallest and the largest number. mode Is the most common.

  9. Vocabulary explained • The RANGE is the difference between the highest number and the lowest number in a set of data. It tells us how spread out the data is. • The MODE is the most common number in a set of data. • Both these are called STATISTICS.

  17. Decimals Sometimes the mean will be a decimal 7cm 8cm 7 Kg 12Kg 15Kg 7ml 11ml 23ml 15ml

  18. median What is the ? • 129, 129, 135, 137, 140 A set of numbers are ordered from the smallest to the largest. The number in the middle is the MEDIAN.

  21. Now try these 20, 30, 10 ,50, 40, 60 22, 44, 12, 36 50, 100, 10, 30, 70, 90
