HRSA Hotel Demonstration Project The Next Generation Workspace Brandon Guzzone HDP
Background • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) started its telework program more than 5 years ago with a handful of staff • Today, more than 800 employees participate in the HRSA telework program • To meet fiscal and human capital requirements, the Agency is creating an infrastructure that can support a mobile workforce in a changing workspace
What is the Hotel Demonstration Project (HDP)? • Hoteling is an arrangement where frequent teleworkers use shared space when they are on site • The HDP is a 12 month program designed to test the viability of hoteling for HRSA employees • Employees who participate in the HDP: • Work from home three to four days a week • Utilize a Government-furnished laptop • Temporarily relinquish their private office/cubicle space • Reserve office space in a shared hoteling office
What Does Success Look Like? • Reduced space • Reduced overhead cost • Increased employee satisfaction and engagement • Improved employee job performance
Who Needs To Be Involved? • Evaluation • Facilities • Information Technology • Policy • Training and Development
What Should You Watch Out For? • Miscommunication • Management by sight • Resistance to change • Social disconnect • Barriers to knowledge sharing
What Did We Do? • Communicated early and often • Educated managers and employees • Facilitated change • Utilized new communication channels • Picked the right space
What Did We Learn? • Build evaluation into your program design • Use a phased approach • Hoteling is not for everyone • So far, it works!
What Is Next? • Continue to evaluate the impact of hoteling • Determine if hoteling is a viable long-term solution for HRSA • Modify, expand, and/or discontinue the program
