  1. Chopping with theLinac4 Pre-chopper

  2. Apply 10kV to a deflection plate 0V for the passage of the beam

  3. Timing Diagram for the baseline scenario NX.START-CHOP NX.STOP-CHOP • Pre-chopper rise and fall time of 2µs is aimed for (to 1%). • After NX.STOP-CHOP, space charge compensation delays the rise to fall intensity matched to RFQ. • To make shorter beams, NX.START-CHOP can be advanced (but the source RF is left on). • Ideal timings are shown, some warning adjustment is needed, depending on driver. Timings should be sent by the chopper system? • Beam is dumped on the RFQ input flange. • The pre-chopper is NOT fail safe. The extinction ratio is not known.

  4. Can the system be pulsed per ring? • The rise of the space charge compensation will return from each pre-chopper • Space charge compensation ions will have transverse oscillations from 1MHz upwards (depends on the beam size, which varies).

  5. Can the system be pulsed per ring? • Requires further driver modifications (beyond ABP group). • Compensations (which is the same sort of time scale as the injection period) and oscillations will make this process very messy, and not stable. • This is not a good option for stopping the beam per ring.
