  2. Compact Bone • Outer layer of bone (diaphysis) • Compact bone organized into structural units called osteons or Haversian systems • Each ring is called a concentric lamella • Surround a central ring or canal – blood

  3. Spongy Bone • Ends of the bone- porous (epiphyses) • Trabeculae – needlelike threads of spongy bone

  4. Osteocytes Bone Cells Lie in between hard layers of lamellae in little spaces called lacunae Canaliculiare tiny passageways connecting lacunae with the central canal in each osteon.

  5. Cartilage • A firm cell instead of a calcified cement substance • Has flexibility of a firm plastic. • Come from chondrocytes • No blood vessels in cartilage – nutrients must diffuse through the matrix • Cartilage rebuilds very slowly – long recovery
