  1. Sustainable Development Trophy 2007energivie(Energy savings for a better standard of living)EDF Commerce - DCPP EstBEVINDINGEN

  2. Customers can rely on an energy saving label for brand new domestic appliances, but what about second-hand domestic appliances ??? and that’s how a great idea was born…

  3. The ContextThe ENVIE association stemmed from the Emmaüs mouvement in France. ENVIE repairs and sells second-hand domestic appliances using staff that are mostly poor or marginals in search of a job. The objective being to provide employment within a two-year period. Each ENVIE shop sells nearly half the volume of a specialised domestic appliance sales outlet.

  4. The Context(continued)The majority of the ENVIE client base is made up of underprivileged persons (including the fuel poor) : they buy second hand appliances because they don’t have enough money to buy brand new ones.OurENergiVIE action is linked to the paradoxical situation that those who most need to benefit from the advantages of efficient energy are those that do not benefit from acces to the necessary information and those that cannot access the new domestic appliances market.

  5. The Context(Continued)It’s therefore in this specific context that we approached each ENVIE shop and the 5 ADEME Authorities (state authority for energy savings and environmental protection) in the East of France, to set up this project together.

  6. The Project Description - A training course (and an awareness campaign) focused on energy savings for all the ENVIE Association staff.- A specific training course for the sales staff (an energy-aware sales pitch for the sale of second-hand domestic appliances)

  7. The Project Description (Continued)- A single operating mode to establish the consumption bill of renovated appliances.- A specific consumption display (energy savings sticker) on each appliance.- An energy savings communication poster for each category of appliance in the sales area.- Specific energy savings tips included with the technical insctructions for each appliance.

  8. For each restored appliance : A protocole for measuring the energy consumption with a single and easy to use instrument.

  9. On each appliance on sale : Its energy consumption, pre-determined in the workshop, is displayed on a sticker with a direct link to the recommended saving tips.

  10. In each sales area (fridge/freezer, washing machines, audio-visual) : An energy savings awareness poster In the lobby : Available self-service documentation (offered by EDF and the ADEME)

  11. On the back page of the technical instructions for each aplliance : Useful tips for saving energy with the appliance

  12. The Project Description : (Continued)- An energy efficiency audit of the ENVIE association workshops and sales outlets.- EDF would like the project to anable the removal from the second-hand market place of all high energy-consuming appliances.

  13. Contribution to Sustainable Development From an economic point of view:The project contributes to the development of ENVIES’s turnover. The project allows underprivileged clients to save energy and money and allows them access to information on energy efficiency and savings.A common sense, simple, down-to-earth, and efficient action that is cost effective for EDF, and of great value for the stakeholders (ENVIE staff, Envie customers… and the planet).

  14. Contribution to Sustainable Development (Continued)From an environmental point of view :The project and the energy label contribute to reducing energy demand (customers are advised to buy energy efficient appliances). The project enables the identification of high energy consuming appliances that will, in the future, fuel the D3E market (dismanteling of electric, electronic and domestic appliances).

  15. Contribution to Sustainable Development (Continued) From a society and social point of view :Professionnal integration into the workplace for the association staff. Preventive approach towards fuel poor people, who get advice on buying appliances with the lowest energy consumption, as they can’t access the brand new appliances market (the energy label is already available for this market).

  16. It’s an innovative project...…to allow the ENVIE sales staff to advise their clients on efficient energy consumption. …to move away from the paradox of those who need energy (i.e money) savings because they can’t spend a lot of money have no information about energy savings for appliances, that could help them to save energy and money. …to professionnalise the Envie Staff (mostly uneducated people, with a lot of social and employment handicaps), allow them to learn new skills and tips about energy savings and give better advice to their clients.

  17. A project based on cooperation……in order to create a new market for a real, realistic and visible cooperation between EDF, the ADEME, the County Councils, the local associations and the Energy Information Centers …

  18. An operational project…...that is structured and low-cost.…that mobilises our partners in order to increase our contribution to energy savings…that provides an education for the underprivileged and a better life for everybody. That’s our French vision of « public service »

  19. A project easy to reproduce……as it’s already in operation in five regions in France (10 Envie shops)…and can be easily reproduced elsewhere in France, in Europe or worldwide.

  20. To conclude…This initiative is simple, pragmatic and efficient. We propose an effective answer to the problem of energy consumption on the second-hand domestic appliance market, through energy savings, pragmatic information, education and saving tips, that will benefit the underprivileged and fuel poor.We strongly rely on the the EDF Group corporate strategy and vision (energy access for everybody, energy efficiency and savings all over the world, C02 emission reduction)With this initiative, ENVIE customers take back their rights to save energy and improve their standard of living !

  21. We hope that this project can be deployed throughout all of the ENVIE Associations in France…and why not towards other similar associations throughout Europe.

  22. Signing of the convention in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France With our partners, we have the energy and the common vision to go further … and you ?
