  1. Use a Professional for a Chimney Inspection and Cleaning With the popularity of DIY blogs and shows, everyone tries to do home repairs themselves these days. Whether it’s because you’ve learned to fix your own leaky faucets, refinish your own floors or repair your own roof, you may find yourself calling professionals less and less often. However, while saving money is always appealing, there are some projects trying to do yourself might be more of a hassle than they’re worth. A DIY chimney inspection and cleaning is harder than it sounds. Inspecting your own chimney requires much more than simply looking at the areas you can easily see for obvious damage. If your chimney is connected to a fireplace, inspecting it will involve getting a flashlight and sticking your upper body in the fireplace to attempt so see the inside of your chimney. As you do so, you’ll most likely disturb soot and ash in your chimney, so you should wear old clothing and place tarps around your living room before hand. If your fireplace has any doors or panels you’ll have to remove them, which will probably require tools you may not have. You may also have to go to your roof to inspect the outside of your chimney, which can be difficult and dangerous. If you thought inspecting your chimney sounds like a lot of work, cleaning it will seem like more than any money you save is worth. In order to clean your chimney you’ll have to remove any panels and doors and buy specialty chimney cleaning tools. If you’re only going for a basic clean to keep your chimney in good shape in between professional cleanings, specialty tools aren’t necessary. But if you’re replacing an annual professional cleaning by doing it yourself, you’ll have to spend a lot of time and money to make sure you clean the chimney completely. You’ll need protective gear for yourself and your home, along with cleaning tools like brushes and chimney soot cleaner. Once you’re prepared with protective clothing and have placed tarps on your fireplace and around the room, you’ll spend hours going back and forth from the roof to the chimney. By the time you're done setting up, cleaning your chimney and putting everything away, you’ll have spent a good chunk of money and time on this project. A professional chimney inspection and cleaning may cost money, but having someone clean your chimney more quickly and extensively than you can may just be worth it.
