  2. London Olympic & Paralympic Games 2012 • the greatest show on earth, the 30th Olympiad, starts at 7.30 pm, Friday 27 July, 2012; and finishes Sunday 12 August • Cultural Festival between Olympics and Paralympics • Paralympics: Wed. 29 August – Sun. 9 September

Scale of London 2012 Games • International Olympic Committee (IOC) has 203 member countries • International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has 160 members • Olympic Park - 2.5 square kilometres site • 9 new venues, with 169,000 seats • 17,000 bed athletes’ village • Estimated peak of construction workforce will be 9,000 in 2010

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) • Land acquisition, clearance, demolition, remediation and bulk earthworks • Infrastructure • 4 main buildings – main stadium; aquatics centre; media centre, athletes’ village • Subsidiary venues, many of which will be de-mountable • Venues round the country • Budget approx. £3.5 billion • Chair – John Armitt (ex C.Ex. of Network Rail) • Chief Executive – David Higgins • Board – 12 Members

  6. Some Tenders Awarded • Demolition and remediation – Edmund Nuttall and Galliford Try • Under-grounding of power lines - J Murphy & Sons – 52 pylons removed; 2 tunnels each 6 kilometres long • Master-Planning of Olympic Park and infrastructure – EDAW Consortium

Transport Expenditure for the Games • Estimated total of £17 billion – by TfL, Network Rail, LDA • Transport to, from and around Olympic sites (e.g 100 km of dedicated “Olympic” lanes) • Transport improvements in the 5 “Olympic” boroughs • Transport improvements London-wide (e.g DLR and tube extensions) • Transport improvements outside London (e.g Thames Gateway; Eurostar route, etc) • Transport Plan to be published summer 2007

The Five “Olympic” Boroughs The five London Boroughs, within which the majority of the Games will take place, all plan significant infrastructure improvements and developments:- • London Borough of Hackney (currently no tube station) • Newham (inc. “Stratford City” = £5 billion) • Tower Hamlets (Ballymore Properties) • Waltham Forest • Greenwich (Gymnastics; Equestrian; shooting)
