  2. The Artist… • Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) • Mother died when he was only 6 days old and was raised by his dad and a housekeeper • Studied theology at Exeter College, Oxford • William Morris • John Ruskin • Rossetti • Intended to become a Minister, but left Oxford without a degree

  3. 1865: Married Georgiana MacDonald • 1881: Received a honorary degree from Oxford • 1883: Became an Honorary Fellow • 1894: He was Knighted • His popularity was low the last few years of his life • Mid 1970s: His work was once again acclaimed

  4. Other crafts than painting • Considered largely responsible for bringing the Pre-Raphaelites into the mainstream British art • His work is characterized by the unique look of the women who feature prominently in virtually every piece, by his vivid use of color and his fondness for architectural frames and backgrounds

  7. His women are fit the classic Pre-Raphaelite model of fine features, high cheekbones and curly red or brown hair. They are almost always draped in intricate classical gowns. • Unlike other Pre-Raphaelites like Layton and Waterhouse, Burne-Jones had a practical streak and did a number of works on commission and for publication.
