Metal salts, like most inorganic compounds, are formed from inorganic materials. The most common metal salts are chlorides and sulfates, or the compounds of metals with halogens or sulfur. Metal salts are the combination of a metal cation and an anion. A cation is a positively charged ion formed from a metal by removing one or more electrons. An anion is a negatively charged ion formed by adding one or more electrons to a non-metal. The most common anions found in metal salts are oxygen and sulfur, but many others exist. Metal salts have many uses: corrosion inhibitors, bleaching agents, flocculants (clarifying agents), antiseptics, magnesia production and recovery, plasticizers (softening agents), electroplating and galvanizing. Where are metal salts used? For years, the electroplating industry has been using Metal Salts and metal salt solutions as an effective way to coat or add special properties to various surfaces. Electroplating is a process that is used when you want to add a shiny, corrosion-resistant coating to a surface. It involves putting the object into a solution with ions of the desired metal while it is hooked up to an electrical current. The ions become deposits on the object's surface, creating a decorative coating. Ceramic tiles, glass and steel, are just some surfaces often plated with metals such as chromium and nickel. Many different types of metal salts are used in this process, but you may be surprised to learn that there are also different types of metal salt solutions available. Types of metal salts: ● Nickel Salts:
The uses of nickel salts are very plentiful. They are used in many manufacturing products, such as silverware, jewelry, and even some cooking utensils. It is also used to make coins and batteries. Most people do not realize how important nickel is to our everyday lives. That is why I am attempting to persuade you of the importance of this element. Nickel has many uses in everyday life. For instance, it is used for plating iron and brass. It has been said that most things that have a high-quality silver-like finish have been plated with a substance containing nickel. But these days, more and more people prefer stainless steel pots and pans because of health concerns with nickel. Nickel salts can be found in almost every type of metal plating, from plumbing fixtures to car parts to jewelry. For example, salt shakers are usually made of nickel because this material does not react with food or drink that comes into contact with it.
Another popular use of nickel is in the manufacture of special alloys which retain a high silvery polish so commonly used in tableware and flatware. Nickel salts are also used as catalysts in organic synthesis. ● Copper Salts: Copper compounds are used in many industries, such as agriculture and medicine. Copper chlorides are used in the chemical industry and in manufacturing dyes and pigments. Copper sulphate is used as a fungicide in agriculture. It is also the main ingredient in some brass alloys. It has various uses, including plumbing, electrical applications, and musical instruments. Brass also has some decorative uses, such as architectural decoration, especially in statues and fountains.
Copper is a precious metal that has been used since ancient times. It has been fashioned into coins, jewelry, tools and weapons. Copper was even used by the Incas 5,000 years ago for ceremonial headgear. ● Zinc Salts: Zinc salts are found in galvanization. Zinc is the second most prevalent element in the Earth's crust and is a very reactive metal. When zinc is added to iron or steel, the zinc will corrode and protect the iron or steel underneath from corrosion. This process is called galvanization. The zinc can be applied through electrochemical deposition or as molten zinc by hot-dip galvanizing or spraying.
Recently, there has been a shift to zinc flakes deposit, meaning that a thinner layer of zinc is used for corrosion protection; this offers better corrosion resistance than other popular forms of zinc coatings. ● Tin Salts: Tin salts are a class of compounds made from tin and salts. The main tin salt is tin chloride, which is used in producing tin oxide for steel-making. Tin oxide makes rubber and plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It's also used to make certain types of glass, ceramics, and enamels. Some other tin salts are just as versatile—they're also used in manufacturing processes or have other uses. Tin Hydroxide, for example, is a white powder mixed with water and heated to about 300 degrees Celsius (572 degrees Fahrenheit) to create soft, flexible foam for insulation.
