    12. Recommended Engineering Design Guidelines for Earthen Terraces Conduct a subsurface investigation to obtain geotechnical engineering soil properties for design. This will help determine the final crest elevation based on settlement analyses results. Earthen terraces should be constructed using two construction lifts, roughly 7 days apart. The earthen terraces should be designed using the wind, wave, and water conditions at the desired project site. Flat side slopes will aide in the stability of the terrace. Depending on location, the terrace should be designed for overtopping during high water events.

    13. Recommended Engineering Design Guidelines for Earthen Terraces “Wish List” Quality construction inspection and record keeping will result in accurate documentation for evaluating the original design assumptions. This information may be used for future projects. Wave height instrumentation placed on both sides of the earthen terrace will enable the designer to quantify the design wave height, and the dampening effects of the vegetative cover during overtopping events. Earthen Terraces should be used cautiously for shoreline protection. The Engineer should coordinate with Scientists to achieve the desired project goals.
