What is a Quartet? • A quartet is an ensemble of four players, who each have their own part. • They may have four different instruments, or one instrument may be doubled like in a string quartet. • For string and voice quartets, the instruments play four parts – SATB. • SATB stands for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass.

  3. String Quartet • A string quartet is made of two violins, a viola, and a cello. • Violin has the highest range so they play the soprano and alto lines. Viola has a middle range so it plays tenor. Cello plays the bass range. • String quartets have been around since the late 1700s.

  5. Voice Quartets • Just like in a string quartet, the parts are SATB. Soprano and Alto are both sung by women while Tenor and Bass are sung by men. • There are many types of vocal quartets, including the popular barbershop style.

  7. Jazz Quartets • Jazz quartets are made of a horn, a “chord” instrument, a bass, and a drum kit. • The horn could be either a saxophone or a trumpet. They play the lead and will often solo while everyone else keeps playing. • Keyboards or electric guitar are the most popular instruments to play chords. • Bass can either be a bass guitar or a string bass.
