  1. How to Use a Floor Plan in 2D to Convert a Garage into a Master Bedroom Whether you need more living space for your growing family or are looking to increase the value of your home, converting your garage into a master bedroom can seem like a great idea. But if you are going to do it, don’t jump in blindly. The last thing you want is to lay down a lot of money for the conversion only to discover that what you want just won’t work. Before you begin, get a floor plan in 2D done. Here is how it can help. Learn how much total space you have. The first thing a 2D floor plan tells you is how big the garage is. Standard size for a master bedroom these days is around 500 square feet. For most garages, that won’t be a problem, but you want to know for sure before starting. Beyond the overall size of the room, you can create elements representing the furniture, fixtures (bath, sinks, etc.), closet, and more to see if your dreams match the reality or if you need to make some changes. What do you want more – that giant walk-in closet or his and hers sinks with a Jacuzzi bath? Plan for plumbing and electricity.

  2. Do you have an attached garage, or is it standalone? Either way, you are going to want to plan for the bathroom to be placed as closely as possible to existing plumbing to make your job easier. And while it is likely that your garage is wired for electricity, chances are good that you will want to add some outlets, wiring for more lights, and so on – a floor plan gives you a better idea where these things can go as well. Windows, doors, and orientation. If you have an attached garage, there is already a door heading into the house. Technically you don’t have to keep that door where it is, but it will likely be easier than sealing off the wall and creating a new one. Regardless, you’ll want to plan the layout of your room, at least in part, based on where the door currently is located. Windows are another big consideration. Have a garage with existing windows? You will want to position the room around them. A floor plan in 2D also lets you see where you’re getting light… and where you’ll need more of it. That may mean creating new windows. Or it could mean making sure that you account for these darker spaces in your interior lighting. Whatever your situation, being able to look at the plan will help. Ready to start planning?
