  5. How should I set up homework at my house? • Pick an organized/clutter free area(homework ‘spot’ or ‘station’. (kitchen table, quiet area in the living room etc.) • Have materials needed for homework in that area at all times • Provide visuals for complex concepts based on what the teacher suggests or provides • Utilize reinforcement/check systems/expectation sheets/rules & established criteria (ex. 30 min of homework with 100% effort = a break etc) • Use a timer! • Walk away and see how independent your child can be. (Avoid learned helplessness) • Communicate with the teacher about your child’s effort (make notes on the page) • First /then statements or a schedule • Utilize siblings effectively (set up homework time throughout the entire house- even if you and your 3 year old are reading while your 3rd Grader completes his/her homework) • Calendar reinforcement/visual
