A national circulation system in Sweden • proceedings and conclusions Lisa Petersen 2007-10-11
A national circulation system – benefit + Cost-effective solution for licenses, maintenance and development + Improved service for end-users + Improved workflow for cataloguers + Next generation system
A national circulation system – costs Approx. 20 Million SEK / year KB don’t have the money to purchase/develop and implement the software The libraries don’t have the money until the costs for the local systems are gone Who will pay during the meantime?
Not included in the study • Cataloguing • OPAC • ILL • Acquisition • Periodicals module

Since then… • Specification of functionality, including architecture • Request for information, RFI • All systems had the requested circulation functionality (or was ”good enough”) • None of the systems had the requested SOA architecture (or was ”modular enough”)
Conclusion • The answers to the RFI give us no reason to believe that there, for the time being, is an appropriate system available on the market • Possible solutions: • In-house development combined with use of opensource software • Cooperation within the Nordic countries
And now • Final report in a couple of weeks • Reactions from the libraries • The National Librarian decides whether or not to proceed with the question • If we are to proceed, the next step should be a more concrete technical project • Financial question still isn’t solved
